Executive Director

Nebraska Shakespeare has served our community for over thirty years with summer festivals and winter educational tours. We are one of the few programs nationwide that still don’t charge an entrance fee. A successful candidate for our executive director position will combine artistic sensibilities, administrative experience and leadership gifts. The ED needs to be able to support the artistic vision of our artistic director while maintaining the fiscal and management discipline necessary to keep our organization on course. Overview The ED reports to the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees an is responsible for the daily management of the organization. As the organization’s leader, the ED is responsible for building, coaching and managing an effective staff while cultivating productive relationships with the Board of Trustees, donors, sponsors and other key stakeholders. The executive director is responsible for leading strategic development, budgeting and financial management, overseeing fundraising initiatives, hires and oversees their staff and manages administrative and HR functions. Key Functions

  • relates to the Board of Trustees, attends all Board meetings and assists the Chairman in board meeting agenda creation;
  • hires and supervises a staff that currently includes an artistic director, Development Director, Marketing Director, Education Director, Accounting Manager and administrative assistant; they will also have oversight of interns working with us;
  • works with the Board, Development Committee and Development Director on fundraising and development strategies; this includes not only donations but grants as well;
  • works with the financial and executive committees to generate an annual budget which becomes the guide in fiscal decisions; reports financial results, budget performance, forecasting and balance sheet; works with an outside CPA firm to conduct an annual financial review and to prepare the 990 report;
  • oversees all contracts related to production including Equity actors, maintains our relationship with Actor’s Equity and conducts exit interviews with seasonal artists to evaluate their experience with NS
  • works with the education director to support and expand our annual tour to schools statewide
  • serves as the face of NS; building relationships with local, state and regional organizations, including government agencies, the media, advocacy groups, community groups, businesses and arts organizations.
The ideal candidate will have:
  • business management experience, ideally some in the arts
  • proven ability to collaborate with diverse groups and support our efforts at inclusion
  • fundraising experience including direct donor solicitation a must
  • successful grant writing history
  • ability to build and lead effective teams
  • experience in fiscal management
  • demonstrated marketing success
  • ability to develop and implement, in collaboration with the Board, long term strategic initiatives along with annual tactical plans.
  • Salary is approximately $70k before adjustments for qualifications and experience

Artistic Director

Nebraska Shakespeare has served our community for over thirty years with summer festivals and winter educational tours. Reporting directly to the Executive Director(ED), the Artistic Director is responsible for providing artistic direction as well as sharing in the administrative responsibilities of running the organization, particularly as it pertains directly to productions. This includes hiring artistic personnel, including directors, stage and production management, designers, dramaturgs, actors, choreographers, musical directors, technical directors and production crews. They will be assisted in these tasks by the Director of Production, who reports to them. They also supervise the director of Education and the seasonal artists. Key Functions

  • attends Board meetings and where appropriate, board committee meetings;
  • works with the ED and board in setting long term strategic goals, including especially those related to artistic direction;
  • presents an annual report to the Board after each season, evaluating the success in achieving artistic objectives, organizational mission and strategic priorities;
  • drafts and presents to the Board an annual update of the philosophical and practical artistic vision for approval, and overseas the productions according to this shared vision;
  • oversees the educational and touring operations, working with the Director of Education, to ensure the effective and productive results of our educational programming;
  • hires and supervises the production staff and directs artistic operations; they supervise all productions, including those directed by guest directors;
  • is responsible for scheduling auditions, rehearsals, and photo calls; this generally includes some national travel(Chicago, Orlando, other) to interview potential artistic staff;
  • with the Directors of Production and Education, develops an annual production budget to be presented to the ED and ratified by the Board; once approved they are responsible for making sure expenses follow this budget, including proactively addressing any unforeseen financial concerns or shortfalls;
  • promotes the artistic image of the organization within the general public and theatre community; participates with the staff and the Board to support the fundraising and marketing efforts of the organization.
The ideal candidate will have:
  • strong leadership ability, effective organizational skills and solid interpersonal capacities;
  • a track record of leading, managing and developing a team;
  • a passion for the theatre;
  • a desire to mentor students and emerging artists;
  • a commitment to maintaining a high standard in art while able to live within fiscal boundaries;
  • preferably, a post graduate degree with experience instructing college level courses, as well as directing professional level talent;
  • a solid knowledge and experience with Shakespeare’s work;
  • prior experience as an Artistic Director with a reputable theatre;
  • previous work with educational institutions would be a plus.
