Soup, Shakespeare & Bawdy Stuff

“Soup, Shakespeare & Bawdy Stuff”

Soup, Shakespeare & Bawdy Stuff, a benefit for Nebraska Shakespeare, was held at the Creighton University Harper Center on Thursday, April 2, 2009. During cocktails, attendees were serenaded by Robert Glaser on the piano and encouraged to don fanciful headgear and masks to get in the mood.

Bard's Bawdy Soups were the meal of the night catered by Sodexo International.  Centerpieces were large soup cans beautifully stuffed with daffodils, tulips and forsythia cuttings. Clever copy on labels included: “No Toil or Trouble - Just Good Eatin'” and “Serve garnished with eye of newt & toe of frog.” “The theme for the evening was in keeping with the economic environment swapping beef for broth and good cheer,” said Mary Ann Bamber, Managing Director Nebraska Shakespeare.

Vicki and Dave Krecek were event co-chairs and MC.  Scott Moore was the auctioneer for the evening.  With about 160 lovers of the Bard attending, the event raised more than $16,000. “Dave and I were tremendously pleased to see the outpouring of support for Nebraska Shakespeare, and in particular the desire to keep our Shakespeare festival free to the public.  In our ‘non auction’ where we just asked people to agree to donate, we had great and enthusiastic response.  It was a delightful evening in a beautiful setting,” said Vicki Krecek.

Terry Doughman, Nebraska Shakespeare's Stage Combat Director and Fight Choreographer, provided the evening's entertainment with teammate Scott Kurz, Director, Brigit Saint Brigit Theatre - delivered flashing swords, parries and informative “behind the scenes” insights.  Cindy Melby Phaneuf previewed the 2009 Season of Macbeth which will run June 18-21 & 24-28. High School students dressed in colorful Shakespearean wear sold decks of Shakespeare Insult and Quote cards.
